Tips for Traveling with the In-Laws

I will never forget the first trip I went on with my mother-in-law…

Thankfully, I absolutely adore her so it isn’t one of those situations where we can’t stand each other and it is like pulling teeth to get us to hang out. I would gladly go on vacation with her anytime.

But, I am not naive enough to think that this is the case for everyone…

I know there are plenty of people who can’t stand their in-laws or who might be civil with them, but when it comes to vacation things can get tense.

Sleeping in close quarters can make people easily annoyed over even the smallest of things. And, the last thing you want is for it to all fall apart while you are trying to enjoy a vacation.

In fact, vacation is usually a time to impress your in-laws and seal the deal…

So, if you are nervous about traveling with your in-laws for the first time or just haven’t had a good experience in the past, here are a few tips for an enjoyable trip:

  1. Be respectful

As much as they might annoy you, in the end they are your family and the parents of the person you love. Be respectful of their wishes and their traditions. After all, you aren’t living with them forever. You can handle it for short period of time.

  2. Take alone time

Especially if you all don’t get along, you will need some breathing time. It is okay to grab your cup of coffee and go sit on the porch alone for a few minutes. Taking a breather will help you keep your cool, trust me.

  3. Spend time with them

It sounds crazy, right? You are dreading the trip or super nervous… Either way, make an effort to spend extra time with them. Either you will find something you actually like about them or you might discover how much you do like them.
